The Route

The route of 4.300 kilometres has been divided into 43 cycling stages and 14 rest days. The daily distances vary between 50 and 140 kilometres with an average of 100 kilometres per day.

The road conditions are a mix of paved roads, hard pistes, gravel and sandy tracks. Most of the distance is unpaved ( 55 per cent ). The route requires now and then technical mountain bike riding skills to handle the undergrounds with big stones and deep gullies. A dozen of stages you can opt for a less challenging paved alternative to avoid the rough African road conditions, but be prepared, this is definitely not always the case.

The full route has over 50.000 meters ( 165.000 feet ) of elevation gain for the rider. That makes it an average of almost 1.200 meters per day. The first section of the tour from Nairobi to Kigali has less climbing ( average 950 meters per day ) with a few stages with more than 1.500 meters. The second part from Kigali to Nairobi is more mountainous ( average 1.300 meters ) with some serious stages of more than 2.000 climbing meters.

A GPS which has the option to upload tracks is essential and will be your most important route finder in East-Africa where we try to stick to the minor roads and where road signs are hard to find.

During the rest days you have the possibility to make interesting site trips to a dozen of National Parks :

Country National Park

Kenya Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Hell's Gate National Park
Tanzania Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangira National Park, Ngorongoro National Park, Serengeti National Park
