Tourletters from St. Louis

Finally... Beers...

We left the hectic and dirty city of Nouakchott three days ago. Within one day, and a cycling distance of 140 kilometers, all life came back : green acacias, grazing cows, small blooming baobab trees, flying birds and everything which characterize the savannah landscape. The people became darker and darker. The Arabic world changed into the typical African world. It was clear that the immense Sahara was behind us.
The last two days in Mauritania we cycled for about 90 kilometers over an unpaved dyke through the Dawling National Park. Hundreds of flamingo’s started their flight when we passed with our bikes and wild boars were running next to us. The cyclists got hundreds of impressions during their ride through Mauritania. The emptiness, sand and camels in the north, the hectic and dirt of Nouakchott, and the people, flora and fauna in the south. Everyone felt comfortable in Mauritania and no-one experienced a “dangerous” or unwelcoming country. The little fears, which we had when we entered the country, were founded by ignorance. Everyone could leave the country with a positive feeling and lots of unforgettable impressions. The only “negative” point of the last week was the lack of alcohol. Now, on the rest day in St. Louis, we can make it up. Senegal is a much more liberal country and the beers taste wonderful in the heat… How good can a beer taste?
It’s counting down to Dakar…  3 days...
